Cantata service
The German Congregation’s Vocal Ensemble, led by Agnes Goerke, and the Encanto House Band present Johann Rosenmüller’s instrumental music, as well as his cantata Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt during the Sunday mass.
Rosenmüller (1619–1684), born in Oelsnitz, began his work in Leipzig where he taught music at the St. Thomas Cathedral School and worked as the organist at St. Nicholas Church from 1651. He failed to win the job of Kantor at St. Thomas Church due to charges of homosexuality, and he escaped to Venice. There Rosenmüller began working as a trombone player at St. Mark’s Cathedral. He became known for both his instrumental and vocal music, and his compositions also spread beyond Italy. Rosenmüller became the official composer of the Ospedale della Pieta. In 1682, he returned to Germany, where he became concertmaster of the Wolfenbüttel court (near Braunschweig).
